Since the beginning of 2010 we have been getting back into the live video game and have successfully broadcast a handful of events including the monthly Boulder New Tech Meetup.  Our renewed interest in live broadcasting is due to faster broadband and new tools available that make the end user experience a very good one.  We were turned on to the new Ustream Producer software, which allows the broadcaster to easily prep graphics in advance and mix a variety of audio, video and graphics on the fly during the live event.

We have more live events scheduled over the next couple of months and are now offering live video broadcasting as a service to companies looking to reach larger audiences and a way for people to participate without having to be present at the location of the meeting or event.  This service can be used for internal company communications or external broadcasts to the general public.

On Thursday March 27th Kevin Cawley put together Boulder’s first Facebook Developer Garage. We joined forces with Kevin and provided a live video broadcast of the event. Here are the details of the broadcast:

We used a Panasonic DVX100A mounted on a tripod with an Audio Technica AT897 shotgun microphone. We connected the the camera to a Dell laptop via Firewire and used UStream’s free live video broadcasting service. We also ran audio out of the camera via RCA and connected to the laptop via the microphone jack. A little tweaking was necessary for clean audio, and we were provided with instant feedback via the UStream chat room once the audio was fixed. Initially we only had 3 online viewers for the live video broadcast, but as word got out via email, blogs and eventually Twitter, the viewer count climbed as high as 43 simultaneous viewers. The chat room remained a hot spot with most of the online viewers participating. The live stream was up for over 2 hours without a hitch.

It looks like iClips has redesigned their website and added the archived video of the Sound Tribe Sector 9 and Yonder Mountain String Band shows. OnSight Media assisted in the video production of these shows and the footage looks and sounds great. The site uses a Flash video player with the ability to go full screen.

Sound Tribe Sector 9 played 2 nights at Red Rocks Amphitheater on September 7th & 8th. We assisted iClips in the production of the show, which was broadcast live on the iClips.net website and fed to the projection screen located at stage left. Look for an archive of these shows on the iClips website soon.

The camera setup was extensive with several lipstick cameras planted in key positions creating unique perspectives of the musicians. 5 JVC HD cameras were manned by a capable crew – one fixed high above the audience providing a wide, safe and establishing shot, a tripod mounted camera in front of the soundboard for close-ups and shots similar to the photo above, another tripod mounted camera located on stage left, a hand held camera in front of center stage, and a roaming camera on the outskirts of stage right and behind the band providing great shots of the crowd. Each cameraman was equiped with communications to the director who switched the show live for the audience and online viewers. Quite an experience!

UPDATE

Saturday nights show went off without a hitch and a big congratulations goes out to the folks at iClips for managing the logistics and making it happen. If my memory is correct there were a total of 7 cameras coordinated and switched live – 1 stage right, 1 stage left, 1 front of house, 1 roaming on stage, 1 back of crowd / stage left, 1 lipstick cam mounted on the upright bass looking up, and one lipstick cam on the mandolin mic stand. The live switched feed was routed to the giant video screen off to the left of the stage so the audience could see the video too – very cool indeed!

Peter Mayer returned for the second time to Front Porch House Concerts on April 20, 2007. We broadcast the entire show live via the frontporchhouseconcerts.com website, and produced online video clips of the show.

We finally finished editing and uploading the videos from Laura Love and Jenn Todd’s performance at Front Porch House Concerts on February 15th, 2007. We managed to stream the show live that night to several dozen fans. You can also download a couple of items from the iTunes video podcast of this show.

Carey Ott performed at Front Porch House Concerts on Sunday March 18th, 2007. All in attendance were treated to Carey’s unique style that blends Oasis, The Beatles, Radiohead, Bob Dylan, Mike Grebb and other contemporary acoustic and Americana artists. The second song of the night was his “Am I Just One”, which was featured on the TV show Grey’s Anatomy a couple of times.

We were able to stream the show live using Flash as the platform. Still working out a few kinks, but a success nonetheless. Stay tuned for more announcements about our Live Streaming Service.

The latest batch of Elephant Magazine videos are online. We have been streaming some of the shows live as we work out the kinks with the service and we added a banner advertisement to the bottom of the player that we will change each month.

This past Thursday we produced and broadcast live the weekly local show – elephant journal’s. The guests included Seth Braun talking about fast easy and cheap eating aimed at the college crowd, and Bryan Bowen, a local green architect discussing a variety of topics including green building, co-housing and eco-living.
